My Review

My Rating: 4/5

My Recommended Age: 14+

Things To Be Aware Of

Violence: 1/5 (One of the women is hit by a car and we later see her in the hospital with a cut on her face and a cast on her leg. She does recover.)

Sexual Content: 3/5 (The opening montage shows women pulling on lacy undergarments, but nothing critical is shown. Women wear low-cut tops. We learn right away that Andy and her boyfriend share an apartment, and there’s a shot of them in bed. In one scene she unbuttons her blouse, tantalizing him with a glimpse of her bra. He mentions “there’s something they can do that doesn’t involve clothing”. After a break-up, Andy is swept away by a handsome journalist and they wake up in bed with each other the next morning.)

Language: 3/5 (A few uses of the s-word, h*ll, a**, bloody, and the name of God is taken in vain multiple times.)

Other Negative Content: 2/5 (Some of the characters get drunk. The fashion industry is incredibly cutthroat, with plenty of comments about women’s size and beauty standards.)

My Take

The 2nd Devil Wears Prada movie just recently came out in theaters, so I figured I should probably educate myself on the first one, after hearing good things about it. And it was… good.

It’s a very engaging storyline, with the goofy, lovable Andy Sachs as the protagonist, the tyrannical yet brilliant Miranda Priestly as the “villain”, and delightfully entertaining characters like Nigel and Emily to bring some comedic relief. Its portrayal of the fashion industry is very well done, with lots of beautiful clothes and hilarious business-related misadventures to drive the story along.

The content wasn’t super bad: pretty typical for a 2000s drama-comedy. Overall the movie has a light, humorous feel, with no really truly “bad” guys and lovable characters all throughout. I would definitely call this one of those movies that you turn on when you just need a happy comfort movie, and I was definitely entertained and laughed multiple times. (Nigel is the best, there’s no question 😉 If you’re looking for high-end, dramatic films, you probably won’t go for this. But if you love a good humorous, chill, cozy-up-with-a-blanket-on-a-rainy-day drama-comedy, I highly recommend this!
